Work on brand awareness

Whether it’s a promotion, event coverage, or one case study video, it can be seen as an opportunity to work on brand awareness. So all marketing content online should have a consistent style and tone. Therefore, the approach you choose must align with your brand and business culture.

Storytelling improves engagement

It doesn't matter what the target audience is or the purpose of your video, it should always tell a story and have the ability to take your audience on a journey. This is essential if you want your audience to connect with your key messaging.

There are a lot of ways in which you can tell a story, but most storytelling techniques have evolved from the same concept: a three-act structure. At their most basic, the three acts of a script represent a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Lighting and colors

Lighting has always been key to a good video. However, due to cost and logistical reasons not many small or medium size productions use expensive lighting. Today lighting technology has improved, and it is important to consider your lighting options, even when producing a low-budget video. Battery operated light fixtures and high quality sensors in modern cameras make it easier than ever to achieve a great result, almost always regardless of the budget.

One thing that has always been of key importance on all levels of video production is the color. When overlooked, it can greatly alter the outcome of a production. This can be summarized as the challenge of balancing the white balance of each scene, choosing the color palettes for every location, and the color of the light related to the real or fictional time of day. Color can dictate the mood, therefore creating the right conditions for the storytelling to shine.

Composition is important

Composition is the art of arranging objects in a frame. There're shapes and alignments that people find pleasing. The composition will often be linked to your lens choice. There are standard ways of framing a shot such as using the rule of thirds for a talking head.

Sometimes you want to break the rules to get more creative video productions. An example would be playing around with headroom in an interview where you might give someone much more headroom than normal or you might give very little of it as an experimental approach.

Production design

When we're trying to create a different type of video production, especially low cost, people may often overlook or cannot afford production design, and that may affect the final result. As mentioned above, color and lighting are important but at the same time, these are attached to production design.

The props and set themselves help add color to the scene as well as create depth, as well as telling the viewer more about the characters on it. Practical lamps or setting up a scene considering the placement of windows, may help improve the lighting of a shot.

Sound

Many people make mistakes when thinking video is just a visual medium, but the sound is just as important. Also, having good audio is just the beginning of it, it’s also about using it the right way. So, choosing good music or the background track can reinforce your ideas.

There are many other things you can do, but these are some that we, as a company, think are of key importance when you approach your next video production.
